Maquilapolis

11/12/2012 7:04 pm
11/12/2012 8:04 pm
Mon. Nov. 12- People Before Profit film series presents: Maquilopolis
Just over the border in Tijuana, MX is an area peppered with maquiladoras: massive sweatshops often owned by the world's largest multinational corporations. This documentary addresses the negative effects of globalization through the stories of several women trying to balance survival with their own struggle for justice. The filmmakers gave cameras to these women to document their lives & work with, creating a very intimate, immersive experience for the viewer. It employs a mixture of film still shots, computer imagery, artistic and (often clandestine) point of view shots from the maquila workers, and is perfectly scored with a hip Nortec soundtrack.  See the trailer here.
@ Southwest Film Center (UNM SUB, basement level) 7pm, FREE to all.
